La Hotelier, the Hotel School in Dambulla, came into being in the year 2014 under the purview of the then Ministry of Youth Affairs and Skills Development. La Hotelier, Hotel School commenced its operations at Inamaluwe, Dambulla Divisional Secretariat in the Matale District in September 2014, with the financial support of the Skills Sector Development (SSD Programme) under the Ministry and the management of the National Youth Corps. This school, a vocational training institute offers the NVQ qualification to trainees upon their passing out. La Hotelier students of several batches are employed by leading hotels, bakeries and restaurants across the country.

On understanding the prospects and impacts tourism has on the Sri Lankan economy, NYC is prepared to produce a qualified, competent, creative and employable youth to lead the promising field of hospitality.

International Cookery             NVQ level IV

During the period of training at the La Hotelier, the NVQ level courses will be provided free of charge along with NYC’s basic training and soft skills guidance and crash courses in Chinese language and IT.  

International Cookery – NVQ level IV

Occupation: Cook

Scope

  • Preparation of sauces
  • Preparation of salads / appetizers / snacks
  • Preparation of hot range food
  • Preparation of hot / cold drinks
  • Preparation of fish and meat for cooking
  • Preparation of ethnic food
  • Preparation of soups
  • Preparation of desserts / sweets

 

Food & Beverage – NVQ level IV

Occupation: Food and Beverage Server

Scope

  • Preparing food before serving
  • Food serving
  • Preparing tables for wine
  • Catering for rooms
  • Maintenance, cleaning, hygiene and workplace safety
  • Supplying and serving of liquor
  • Carrying out affairs related to bar activities
  • Preparation and Serving of cocktails
  • Conducting banquets

Pastry & Bakery – NVQ level IV

Occupation: Baker

Scope

  • Basic steps in bread and bun production
  • Production of various types of bread and buns
  • Pastry making
  • Making cakes and cookies
  • Dessert making
  • Managing routing functions of a bakery

Hotel House Keeping – NVQ level III

Occupation: Hotel House Keeping

 Scope

  • Check in/out of rooms
  • Service of  vacant rooms / accommodation units
  • Providing rest room / accommodation unit
  • Providing service of floors, guest corridors, service areas, stairwells and pantry
  • Handling Mini bars
  • Communication of Workplace
  • Training on Literacy and Numerical Uses in the Workplace
  • Team work
  • Training on occupational health and safety measures

 

Front Office – NVQ level III

Occupation: Receptionist

Scope

  • Training on Work place communication
  • Training on literacy and numerical practices in the skills area
  • Team Work
  • Following occupational health care and adoption of environmental measures.
  • Attend to customer’s/ Visitor’s requirement
  • Handling communication systems
  • Providing information and services
  • Keeping records
  • Handling customer /visitor complaints

All courses will be provided free of charge. National Youth Corps will provide basic personality development training, leadership, soft skills development training, basic knowledge of Chinese language and information technology to trainees during the hotel training course. All trainees who have completed this training course from its inception to date have now been able to pursue their careers by engaging advanced employment in the relevant field.
